Custom CNC Machined 4140 Alloy Steel Gear Shaft for Industrial Automation Gearbox Project
Project Background
This customer is a US industrial automation system integrator. They design compact reduction gearboxes for robotic material handling and conveyor systems. Their gearboxes need continuous heavy-load operation, low noise and long service life.
Their previous supplier had unstable runout tolerance and long lead times. This delayed prototype validation and product launch. They contacted us to source custom gear shafts and build a reliable backup manufacturer.
Key Challenges
- Strict concentricity and runout requirements for gear tooth profile. Small deviation leads to vibration, noise and early wear.
- Heat treatment after rough machining brings risk of component deformation.
- Start with small prototype batches, then scale to medium volume mass production.
- Material certification and full dimensional inspection reports required for every shipment.

Our Solution
Our engineering team reviewed 3D & 2D drawings at quotation stage.
We use combined 5-axis turning & milling, finishing gear teeth and mounting features in one clamping. This avoids re-fixturing alignment errors.

We reserved extra machining allowance to offset heat treatment deformation. Stress relief process added before hardening to reduce internal material stress.

After heat treatment, CMM full inspection is carried out to verify all critical dimensions. We delivered prototype samples and inspection reports within 14 working days.

Final Result
The gear shaft prototypes fully passed customer bench endurance testing. Gear meshing noise and vibration meet the target specification for their gearbox assembly.
We are selected as their long-term backup supplier for gear shaft parts. We support both prototype and serial orders, helping them shorten lead time and stabilize assembly quality.
