This project involved custom 5-axis CNC machining of PEI (Polyetherimide) parts for a European medical diagnostic device OEM. The client required high-strength, low-outgassing, electrically insulating components that could maintain dimensional stability under continuous temperature cycling inside diagnostic analytical instruments.

Material

PEI / Polyetherimide (ULTEM)

Key Challenges

  1. PEI material is prone to chipping and thermal deformation during high-speed milling; tight tolerance requirements of ±0.02mm on thin rib features.
  2. Complex 3D curved geometry with internal micro-grooves for cable routing and insulation isolation.
  3. Strict surface cleanliness and low outgassing specification to avoid interference with optical sensing modules in medical diagnostic devices.

Our Solution

  • Adopted 5-axis simultaneous CNC machining strategy to complete multi-angle complex contours in one clamping, reducing repositioning errors.
  • Optimized cutting parameters with low-temperature dry machining to control material thermal expansion and prevent edge chipping.
  • Applied precision deburring and ultrasonic cleaning process, full dimensional inspection via CMM before shipment.
  • Performed material batch certification and outgassing test report to meet medical equipment component standards.

Final Result

We delivered the first batch of prototype and pre-production parts within 4 weeks. All parts passed dimensional verification and material performance test. These PEI components are now assembled into the client’s medical diagnostic instruments, providing reliable structural support and electrical insulation for long-duration clinical testing.
